World War II
30 August 1942
Black Cat took command of the Black Cats Squadron during World War II.
August 30, 1942, a formation of marine Corps F4F Wildcats and Army P-400 Airacobras patrol the skies over Guadalcanal. Their mission: stop Japanese bombers and fighters threatening the American beachhead. Leading the flight is Black Cat herself, a costumed Cherokee super hero.
The P-400s have no oxygen equipment and level off at 12,000 feet. But Black Cat pushes her Wildcats above the slower and more vulnerable P-400s.
Black Cat scans the sky for enemy aircraft, but spots nothing. Then her radio crackles to life.
Black Cat receives a frantic radio call from one of the P-400s, who tallies on some enemy fighters that are inbound. Japanese Zeros. Maj. Dirk Yank Cooper, USMC, Top Gun Instructor.
A swarm of more than twenty (20) Zeros threaten the Army Airacobras from the rear.
The Zeros attack the P-400s from behind. Black Cat and the Wildcats are behind and three thousand feet above. The Zeros dont see them.
I wouldnt say they used the P-400s as bait, but the P-400s normally would get in trouble and the Marines would come down and shoot Zeros off the tails of the 400s. RAdm. Paul Gillcrist, USN (Ret.), author and historian.
The Marines dive to resuce the P-400s. Black Cat closes fast on an unsuspecting Zero and takes aim.
